The Benefits of Gender-Specific Fasting and Supporting Herbs & Oils

Published by Pharoh on

Fasting is an ancient practice with well-documented health benefits, including detoxification, metabolic reset, and mental clarity. However, gender-specific fasting—tailoring fasting methods and supportive therapies based on biological differences—can enhance its rewards even further. Men and women have distinct hormonal cycles, metabolic rates, and physiological responses to fasting, making gender-conscious adjustments essential for maximizing health benefits.

Furthermore, the use of gender-specific herbs and essential oils before, during, and after fasting can significantly improve detoxification, hormone balance, and overall well-being. This article explores why fasting should be approached differently for men and women and how targeted natural remedies support the process.

Why Gender-Specific Fasting Matters

Hormonal Balance

In my last Podisode Now, I focused on how you can reach higher faster goals when you follow a fasting-cleansing regimen based on your sex. Fasting in general influences key hormones such as insulin, cortisol, and sex hormones (testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone). Since men and women have different hormonal rhythms, their fasting schedules and durations alone should reflect these differences. For instance:

  • Men, generally tolerate longer fasts due to stable testosterone levels and lower sensitivity to cortisol spikes.
  • Women, have a delicate hormonal balance that can be disrupted by extended fasting, particularly during ovulation and the luteal phase. Shorter fasting windows or cyclical fasting often work better.

Metabolic Differences

Men typically have a higher muscle mass, which increases their metabolic rate. They can engage in more intensive fasting schedules without significant drawbacks. Women on the other hand tend to have a higher fat-to-muscle ratio, making prolonged fasting more likely to trigger stress responses that could lead to hormonal imbalances or metabolic slowdowns.

Nutrient Requirements

Women often require more iron (especially during menstruation), magnesium, and B vitamins to maintain energy levels and hormonal stability while fasting. While Men benefit from zinc, selenium, and amino acids to support testosterone production and muscle retention during fasting. But should activities that support fasting and cleansing efforts also be gender-specific? My experiences with a variety clients and students says yes.

Gender-Specific Herbs & Essential Oils for Fasting

Before fasting preparing the vessel should be done by both men and women in order to achieve every fasting goal optimally. Utilize the following supporting herbs and essential oils wisely and meticulously. In other words, make sure you do not experience any unwanted reactions from the following oils and that you ingest each herb based on its format. For example ingest herb capsules, tinctures and whole herb teas accordingly based on dosage. Dosage should be set based on gender, body weight and age range. Each combination shown below targets specific needs for males and females, typically from ages 21 to 50. Benefits may vary depending on pre-existing conditions. According to my own observations through the decades, these supporting herbs and oils should be on your list of fasting staples.
